Wayne County Dining Guide

Welcome to Wayne County, Georgia, where Southern Hospitality is still a way of life. Located at one of the true crossroads of the new South, the intersections of Hwy. 23 and Hwy. 341, the beautiful new Interstate alternative known as the Golden Isles Parkway, Jesup, Georgia is home to some of the best true Southern cuisine to be found anywhere. Whether you are on the way to Sea Island from Atlanta, or traveling the historic Hwy. 301 to Florida, you will find Jesup a great place for lunch or dinner. Avoid the long lines and traffic of Savannah or Jacksonville, Florida and dine where the “locals” do. Here are some of our favorites:

Wayne County Georgia Dining Guide
Exterior Photograph of Captain Joe's Seafood, Brunswick, GeorgiaCaptain Joe’s Seafood  Just a mile or so south of the Altamaha River, you will find one of Georgia’s best fishing places, best places to eat fish, that is!  The anchor store of a well-known regional of seafood restaurants, Capt. Joe’s features a complete menu of fresh seafood cooked to order.

Spacious dining rooms and a lengthy salad bar make the short wait for piping hot shrimp, flounder, crab, catfish or oysters a pleasure. Enjoy the rustic seaside décor while visiting with family or friends. You may even want to have a quick picture made with the good Captain himself. He’s waiting for you on the bench in the restaurant’s foyer!

The lunch menu offers a variety of soup, sandwich and seafood selections at mid-day prices, but you may order from the extensive regular menu all day. The Captain’s platter serves two and offers a taste of all the best local favorites. For those with more sophisticated dining in mind, the Captain’s cuisine includes crab-stuffed flounder or pecan-crusted salmon served with a special dill sauce. Seniors and young folks are welcome and Captain Joe’s offers a variety of “lighter appetite” selections to accommodate both the young and the young-at-heart. Stop by and see us in Jesup, or at any of our (?) locations along the way! Captain Joe's website: http://www.captainjoesseafood.com/

Overpass Steaks and Ribs

Sep 26, 2008

We came upon this restaurant when we picked up a local newspaper at Wal-Mart and noticed it had been voted best steak for over a decade!! It was a little hard to find because it is literally under an OVERPASS! Sooo cute inside! It had trains running up around the booths and seemed both elegant and family friendly. The service was good but what overshadowed it all was the taste of the steak. I ordered the medium ribeye, medium, with a baked sweet potato and salad. It was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth!! My husband ordered the T-Bone and he just made grunting noises the entire time he was devouring it!! I'll tell you one thing there was not a drop of steak sauce on either one of our steaks it was just too good to sully with even A-1 sauce. Soooo if you ever end up in little Jesup, Ga. you have to hit this place!

B.J.’s Barbecue    Folks down South know barbecue. And they know the best barbecue is pork, smoked long and slow. Your nose will tell you when you are near B.J.’s place near the 301 by-pass that carries you down Jacksonville way. Just one sniff of that tantalizing aroma and you will find your dinner bell is ringing. Plan to stop for a quick sandwich—pulled pork, of course, or buy a pound or two for a trip to the beach or a ready-made picnic.

Add a quart of Brunswick stew (the real Brunswick as in Brunswick, Ga., just down the road), some fries, slaw and baked beans, and you have a party ready in minutes. For the calorie-conscious, one-half chicken with barbecue sauce on the side, fills the bill and doesn’t cause the scales to creep upwards. Ribs by the rack or by the plate, and smoked Boston butt is also available. B. J.’s own special recipe for BBQ sauce has a mustard base, but the other ingredients are top secret, so stock up while you are here.

Be sure to ask about the boiled green peanuts, or pick up a few Georgia-grown tomatoes or watermelon in season. Dining is al fresco, but please feel free to linger awhile in the picnic shelter and enjoy your meal in the open-air.

Sybil’s Family Restaurant Can the words “fine dining” and “family” be used to describe the same place? They can if you are talking about Sybil’s in Jesup. Known all over the country by folks who love good food. Ms. Sybil, unlike some TV stars, doesn’t just talk about good Southern food she prepares it daily. Her famous fried chicken anchors a menu varied enough to please any palate. Most folks round here don’t bother with the menu, though. They go straight to Sybil’s buffet. Available for lunch (we call that dinner down South) or the evening meal (supper for us Southerners), the buffet changes daily with a variety of meats, fresh salads, vegetables, casseroles, and always a selection of home-made desserts. Sweet tea is abundant and no one is served from the buffet until grace has been said.

Locals often dine with Sybil everyday, but few want to miss her Friday night Seafood Buffet. In fact, you will often find carloads of our neighbors from the coast coming up to eat Sybil’s seafood. Drop in on Friday night and you will find out why they don’t mind the drive…While you are there, enjoy the musical talents of Dr. Ron Wilcox on the grand piano. He recommends the crab stew, so be sure to start your meal with a bowl! Ms. Sybil also does catering, and has plenty of room for private parties. Call her at 912-427-3855. Closed Sunday night.

Western Sizzlin Located at the intersection of Ga. Hwy 23 and Sunset Blvd., Jesup’s version of the Western Sizzlin’ chain is one of a kind. Terry and his capable staff see that every steak is cooked to perfection and that their triple-play buffet is always brimming with the best in meats, vegetables, casseroles and salad. Save room for the dessert bar, which features a large variety of cobblers, cakes, pies, puddings and cookies. Top any of those with soft-serve ice-cream complete with your choice of toppings.

Don’t forget to try the freshly baked yeast rolls with honey butter, and while you are there check out the beautiful new private dining rooms for your next meeting or function.

Want a real weekend treat? Meet the regulars at Western Sizzlin’s weekend breakfast buffet. Choose from all the traditional breakfast favorites, or order your eggs cooked just the way you like them. Savor a huge orange roll fresh from the oven with some of their fragrant coffee while you make your weekend plans—and plan to be back next weekend—Western Sizzlin’s breakfast is habit-forming!
